We caught up with Sara Donaldson of Harper and Harley to find out about her signature style, top styling tips for Spring and the inspiration behind The Room Project by Sara Donaldson.
How would you describe the design look and feel you’ve created?
What was your inspiration?
Velvet is currently a big trend in both the fashion and lifestyle arena and I wanted to hero this fabric in the space. The Rockefeller Mineral fabric is beautiful as it picks up the light while also being a more durable take on a classic velvet.
A sofa is central to the living space, not only as a showpiece of design and décor, but also as a functional part of your home’s everyday environment. It has to stand up to the demands of life’s daily routines and special events.
There is more to buying a sofa than comfort alone. Practicality, design and quality should all be high on the wish list. Our resident trends expert and national sales manager, Triana Odone, believes comfort is extremely important, however, it should not be prioritised over the quality of materials and potential life of the sofa. How a sofa presents in the store is not always how it will look and feel in a year’s time, if the quality isn’t there.
When researching a new sofa you should also think about the structure of the frame and how long it will last. For example, if you move house will your sofa be able to move with you? If it has a strong steel frame, the answer is yes as it’s not going to be damaged by the process of relocation. Also if the covers are damaged or stained during a move be easily removed for cleaning or recovering.
Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when you’re shopping for a new sofa:
A Solid Foundation
Quality can be hidden by the look of a sofa – the secret is in what lies inside. The materials that sofa frames can be made from include a range of treated pine, hardwood or steel. Timber is the most common material used, with quality varying greatly between sofa designs. Poor quality timber may have weak spots that can crack when put under pressure. Steel frames are a stronger and more durable choice that can withstand rigorous use, particularly with the right frame construction. King Living’s steel frame uses high grade steel and comes with a 25 year warranty for peace of mind.
Quality materials contribute not only to the visual appeal of a sofa, but also to its longevity. Ask the retailer about the materials they use. Are fabrics tested for durability, including colour fastness and general wear and tear? Good quality materials will last much longer, are easier to maintain and won’t stretch and sag over time. If selecting a leather sofa, make sure only full-hide leathers are used rather than the thinner and commonly used ‘split’ leathers.
King Living sofas are available in an extensive choice of premium fabrics and luxurious leathers. All covers are completely removable so that they can be removed for cleaning or replaced for a completely new look and all seams are double stitched for added strength and durability.
High Resilience Cushioning
Ever get that sinking feeling when sitting on the sofa? Cushions often hide inferior foams and fillings that will deteriorate over time. Sofas featuring high resilience and memory foams will outlast and out-perform conventional cushioning, while the addition of a pocket spring structure, such as King Living’s KingCell® system, provides long-lasting support. Soft, feathered overlays are a luxurious addition for extra comfort and a relaxed look.
A sofa is one of the largest and most permanent furniture purchases you will make in your home so be sure to ask all the right questions before you buy.

Well it’s sexy tapered legs and minimalistic design were the perfect fit for the contemporary yet elegant style of our new home. Team that with it’s perfect modular shape which suited our dimensions to a tee and it’s availability in Viva leather and we were sold (literally!).
